Cheaper by the Dozen

Cabs in the U.S. Virgin Islands are more affordable when shared

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, taxis are easy to spot. Their license plates will contain the letter P. For example, in St. Croix expect to encounter cars marked CP; TP in St. Thomas; and JP in St. John.

Once a cab has been identified, ask the driver his or her rate. All taxis in the U.S. Virgin Islands are unmetered, but visitors should have no trouble determining the cost of a ride. Set rates are established based on the destination and the number of passengers per cab.

There are plenty of exceptions and surcharges for all of these rules, however, and even though the rate may be "set," speaking with the driver before taking the cab will ensure that travelers do not face any unexpected charges upon arrival. All passengers should bear in mind:

  • Children under the age of six pay half price.

  • All passengers are allowed one parcel (this includes luggage). Any additional pieces will be charged at a rate of $1(USD) per item.

  • Radio calls will incur a surcharge of one-third the fare.

  • Waiting charges are $0.25(USD) per minute after the first ten minutes.

  • Night trips (between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.) are charged an additional $1.50(USD) for in-town fares, and $2(USD) for out-of-town trips.

  • Many guides will happily arrange to give sightseeing tours, though the rate for this is also set. Again, the number of passengers and the specific island will affect the price.

  • Passengers who request a private taxi (one in which the driver will not continue to pick up other passengers) must pay for six seats. The number of passengers present will correspond to the published rate; the unoccupied seats, however, will be charged at the "third or more" fare, which we have placed in the final column.
