Drivers can make good tour guides

Uncommon Cabs

Local laws prevent vacationers from renting a car at the airport, which means that most people will need to take at least one taxi ride during their stay.

Like many of the cabs in the Caribbean, taxis in the British Virgin Islands are unmetered. The government has not established any set rates, however, so travelers should speak with the driver prior to taking a taxi to learn the price. The rate will depend on the number of passengers, and visitors will quickly realize that sharing a cab is the best way to save money on transportation.

Hotel staff members are usually happy to call a taxi for you, but be aware that even if you request a cab, it will not be a private car unless you have specified that you would like it to be. Agreeing to hire a private car means acknowledging that you are willing to pay for the entire car. Drivers can be great tour guides of the British Virgin Islands, and arrangements can usually be made to hire a car and driver on an hourly or daily basis.
