In the Virgin Islands, taxis are more than a way of moving from place to place. Certainly, the large vehicles will take you wherever you wish to go, but friendly drivers are also happy to give visitors a tour of the area they'll be covering together. Oftentimes, cabs will be filled with people sharing a taxi. Locals tend to be outgoing and vibrant, and travelers are quick to discover the legendary island hospitality.
Throughout the Virgin Islands, vehicles used for cabs tend to be large, open-air vans capable of holding up to half a dozen people. Generally, drivers will attempt to accommodate as many passengers as possible, which reduces each person's fare. Visitors are frequently eager to share a cab once they realize the difference it can make in the fare, and many locals are willing to play the part of tour guide, pointing out interesting or notable sights along the way.
The Virgin Islands are filled with friendly people, but there are many customary differences between the U.S. Virgin Islands and their British counterparts. In order to avoid any possible confusion and provide the most accurate information, we have divided this section into two parts, one for each territory.
