Bus travel in the Virgin Islands varies greatly from place to place. Many of the smaller islands don't have any buses at all, while the larger islands tend to have fairly thorough service that makes getting around easy and affordable. Bus service in the British Virgin Islands is not very organized. While there are independently-owned"safari buses" that service the south coast of Tortola, their routes and schedules are extremely flexible, making it nearly impossible to say with any certainty where or when vacationers may be able to take them. These open-sided vehicles charge between $1(USD) and $3(USD), depending on where travelers are able to board and where they plan to disembark. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, all three of the major islands have similar bus service. The only major differences are the operating hours and frequency of service for each stop. St. CroixAir-conditioned Vitran buses service the island of St Croix, charging passengers $1(USD) per trip, although senior citizens are eligible for a special rate of $0.55(USD). While buses are one of the least expensive ways to see the island, the bus system is not known for its promptness, and travelers should not choose the bus if they are on a very tight schedule. Buses run from 5:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. every day but Sunday, when there is no service. The route travels from Christiansted to Frederiksted along Route 75 and most of the stops are serviced once every two hours. St. JohnThe public bus system that runs on the island of St. John charges passengers $1(USD) per trip, with a senior citizens discount of $0.55(USD). Buses run from Cruz Bay to Salt Pond Bay along Centerline Road, enabling them to service most of the island. These public buses are not particularly prompt, and may not be the best transportation option for quick commutes and those in a hurry. Buses run from Cruz Bay at 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. before assuming the normal schedule, in which the stop is serviced at 25 minutes past the hour every hour until the final bus returns at 7:25 p.m. St. ThomasBoth city and county buses run on the island of St. Thomas. The vehicles themselves are rather similar, although at $0.75(USD) the city bus is slightly less expensive than the county bus, which charges $1(USD). Exact change is required. Neither bus system is particularly reliable, and neither are recommended for travelers who need to be somewhere at a certain time. Buses run from 5:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., servicing the area between"town" (Charlotte Amalie) and Red Hook once every hour. Most stops are serviced at least every 30 minutes. Visitors may be thrilled to note that most of the buses are air-conditioned. Schedule and route information can be obtained by telephoning the main office at 340-774-5678. Related Articles
