Transportation options allow travelers to experience the full diversity of the Virgin Islands

Options Abound

The Virgin Islands are some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, but travelers who want to get the most of their vacation will quickly realize that finding interesting and affordable ways to get around is the key to seeing and experiencing everything that the islands have to offer.

Taxis are available in both the British and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and while the experience of catching taxis is similar, the fares can vary greatly. Taxis in the U.S. Virgin Islands have a pre-set rate chart, but the cost of going for a ride in the British Virgin Islands is difficult to determine without speaking to the driver. In both territories, passengers who would like a private cab are expected to pay for the privilege by compensating the driver for absent riders.

Buses are another option that many vacationers are drawn to because they are so inexpensive. Fares on all the islands hover around $1(USD). In the U.S. Virgin Islands, buses are usually air-conditioned and in good condition, although they have a tendency to run a bit behind schedule. The buses that operate in the British Virgin Islands, however, are open-air, safari-style buses that are notorious for neglecting a regular schedule or route. They are affordable and exciting but should be considered an amusing diversion, not a primary mode of transportation to be relied upon.

Travelers who value a sense of independence might be interested in renting a car, a service available on most of the larger Virgin Islands. Both internationally known major companies and local rental agencies are available on the islands, and the rates are usually competitive. Daily rates should fall somewhere between $50(USD) and $80(USD), and weekly rates will range from $300(USD) to $500(USD), respectively. Throughout the islands, drivers stay to the left side of the road, and speed limits are relatively low.

Island-hopping is a favorite activity of vacationers and locals, and ferries and charter boats are an ideal way to see it all. Plenty of local ferry companies run from island to island making it easy for travelers to explore both the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. Rates are based on your destination and can vary from $3(USD) to $50(USD). Charter boats are also available, bareboat for those who want to exercise their navigation skills or crewed for visitors who prefer the foremost island luxury.

Active travelers may feel the need to explore the picturesque islands on their own, and bicycle and moped rentals are widely available. Generally a bike can be rented for a daily rate of about $35(USD). Weekly rates are often available and are usually a great deal. Safety gear should always be worn, and vacationers who opt for renting bikes and scooters are advised to review their course and avoid metropolitan traffic.

Any method for seeing the area will have its own advantage, but all of the choices will no doubt be rewarding. No matter where your interests and curiosity lead you, in the Virgin Islands, getting around is half the fun.
